'Clocks' emerged in conception during the late stages into the production of Coldplay's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. The band's vocalist, Chris Martin, came in studio late one night. Since this song was written when the album was almost ready, the band put it aside for the next album, but Phil Harvey, the band's manager and a friend of Chris Martin, pointed out that the song speaks of urgency, which contradicted the idea of shelving the track.
