You watched your dad spend hours prodding and poking under the hood to find out what was wrong with the family Ford, but your fancy diagnostic system does the same job in minutes. The Ford VCM, or Vehicle Communication Module, is a rugged, high-performance gateway system. It features Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) that guides you through the process of identifying faults with your Ford. A technician can even work remotely to help you fix the vehicle once you connect the VCM. The VCM unit comes in magnesium housing with a tough plastic cover that offers protection and has five LED indicators that provide you with visual information. You connect the VCM to your vehicle using a 16-pin DLC cable.
To analyze the diagnostics, you can hook up an older model to a laptop using an Ethernet-USB adapter cable, but more modern versions connect wirelessly. A full OEM Ford VCM package comes with the unit, cables, software disc, and a plastic box for storage, and you can find it among the vast inventory on eBay.
